MEN'S HAIR LOSS: Drug Therapy

GET INFORMATION NOW!
There are currently two drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that have been show to have positive effects on male hair loss and balding: Propecia® (Finasteride) and Rogaine® (Minoxidil).

Rogaine®, as a male hair loss treatment was first approved by the FDA as a prescription drug in 1991. Then Rogaine® was approved for over the counter use as hair loss treatment in 1996. Rogaine® has proven to be more of a preventative for some types of loss than for regrowing significant amounts of hair. Rogaine® (Minoxidil) is found to be effective in about 25% of men with baldness on the crown of the head. Applied twice a day in a cream, actual growth only occurs as long as it is used.

Propecia® was approved among recognized male baldness treatments by the FDA in 1997. So far Propecia® appears to be a more effective treatment than Rogaine. Unlike Rogaine® which is administered topically, Propecia® is taken orally. Reported side effects of Propecia include decreased libido and impotence in 2% of the subjects tested for the drug's approval. These Propecia side effects disappeared when use of the drug is discontinued. Propecia has not been approved for female use due to reported links to birth defects.
